I apologize!

Wow...It's been too long since I've posted. I realized London is a lot more eventful than I expected. For all of you...or I guess I should say any of you that read this...Let me say I'm sorry for not writing. But okay here it goes, I'll tell you about my collaboration project.
At our time here in London we were assigned a collaboration project. Doing some type of activity that involved words and art and combining them together. Lisa, Katie, Alyssa and I formed a group and brain stormed tons of different things. We came up with the idea to make a project of getting pieces of paper, going out, and having people from London draw their favorite experiences.
Some people were a little intimidated by drawing for us so we had a lot of rejections. But we came out with a pretty great result of art and memories that I hope to remember forever.
This is a video of a lot of the people and the pictures they drew for us.
One man I would like to tell you about is PETER!
Now I already knew we were in for something interesting when he was wandering around talking to himself before we went up to him. We walked over and asked
"Hi, we're doing a project for school and we are asking people to draw their favorite memory."
Peter stared at us confused for a second. and then rummaged through his big coat to find something. This scared us a little but we found out he was just looking for a pen. we handed him a pencil and then he snatched the ENTIRE stack of papers from Katie's hand.
He began furiously scribbling on a piece of paper mumbling under his breath. He starts with drawing circles and saying
"Lava......you know......Lava?! Where you from?!"
"The United States"
"I from Polland."
"Chile....?! Yes, You know?"
"Yes, we know Chile."
Then he flipped over the paper he drew on and star
ted using another to draw a giant map of Chile for us. He rights in big sloppy letters CHILE on top. He then points out a volcano on the side of Chile. Then in the top right corner draws a picture of Scotland. Inbetween the volcano and a poorly drawn version of Scotland he draws tons of lines connecting the two.
He then stares up at the sky as if he's doing some type of mathematical equation and says
"In -5.....uhhhheemmmm......-55"
and writes his calculations on the paper.
This went on for a while and it ended up in him drawing the whole earth and lines connecting the volcano with more math equations in scribbles.
We started to realize if we let him go on we would be there all day and we would be out of paper. So I asked for his name and then told him we had to go. He asked if we needed a bus but we declined and walked a way a little creeped out, but very amused.
Most of our experiences were normal. People would draw something simple and then be happy to leave. But the memories we gained I really enjoy looking back on. The people here are so diverse. I guess you never know what kind of people you meet, if you don't stop to meet them.

I'm not cold, I'm not tired, I'm not hungry

Northern Tour!
One of those things that could be the greatest experience ever or the most miserable thing that ever existed. It all depends on the attitude. thank goodness I'm around girls who are wonderful and we seem to have a great time where ever we are. We splendidly romped through smelly pubs, cow pastures, Mountains that attacked us with violent wind, and even the back of a temperaturely bipolar bus.
So lets use my extremely negative alter ego to list the bad parts of the Northern tour and then I'll use the actual positive version of myself to show you how it really was.

Monday
  • Uncomfortable bus...OR get everyone to lay across one another and result in having some great three hour naps. "assume the position"
  • Chatsworth house having scaffolding over the front...OR just make fun of it and by a post card..and then go watch Pride and Prejudice
  • WORST HOSTEL/FIRST HOSTEL EVER...(for those of you who don't know what a hostel is it's basically a dorm hotel. big room..tons of bunkbeds. community bathrooms.)..OR take over the musty lounge that smells like a cat died under the carpet and have a great chat till the wee hours of morning while smashbooking
Tuesday
  • Hadrians Wall(Bunch of rocks that used to be roman homes) Rain and wind!...OR take funny videos, laugh at each other for buying crappy umbrellas that can't handle the wind, and climb all over the walls like a 9 year old...so glad I didn't have a mom there to tell me to "get down!"
  • Edinburgh....COLD...WINDY...DRUNK PEOPLE...OR enjoy a wonderful hike to Arthurs seat and let the wind blow everyone around like a penny in a dryer, and KARAOKE at a pub...I'm sure we were the only ones who were entertained.
Wednesday
  • Walk in Edinburgh and get lost....OR get a wonderful guided tour with a little head set around a REAL castel. nbd. See beautiful inspiring art, eat the best muffin this world has ever known, and then sing with a cute Scotish boy.
Thursday
  • Ambleside..once again cold, drove for three hours, and the fire alarm kept going off in our hostel....OR go on the most beautiful hike ever, chase around a couple of sheep, terrorize the town by eating at a super nice thai restaurant and looking like we just went on a hike....(which we did) and making ice cream sandwiches out of digestives(they are great..don't judge the name) and cheap ice cream.
Friday
  • Who's house is this? Oh..some dead author I don't know about...cool? ...OR find out that William Wordsworth(or woodsworth, wadsworth...whatever we decided to call him when we forgot his name) actually had the greatest life ever, his wife and sister just took care of him while he walked around outside and made a bunch of money writing a poem about dafodils. Go on a great walk while getting soaking wet, Make fun of Megan for looking like she's in a dinosaur costume, and making fun of my coat over backpack approach to keeping dry..making me look like a huntchback wale/Richard III. AND private room in a hotel!
Saturday
  • Jon makes us go on a walk to ANOTHER dead authors house..even though we just want to go home....OR pick blue hydrangaes(favorite flower) wonder around a sweet dock by a beautiful lake...sorry about there being a rainbow too, and sloshing around in the mud...or cow pies...still not sure. Then head home! writing a church talk and eating chocolate the whole way.

A letter to London

Dear London,

It's good to meet you. In fact...it's incredible to meet you. I already feel like you're a great friend. I hope you feel the same way too. I'm glad you're so full of wisdom and history. You may not be an old friend...but you are OLD friend. I don't know how you carry on. So many people have fallen in love with you. Thanks for making a space for me. I'm sure I will make our friendship worth while....I don't see how I couldn't. Every second I'm with you I realize there is a lot you know that I don't. I hope you'll share some secrets with me.
I really enjoy the quaint streets you possess. I know, most people don't notice, but the little streets lined with beautiful flats are my favorite part about you. I guess it's ironic that I love the most simple part of a city with such complexity.
I enjoyed running around in Hyde park today. I like that you have parks.. Some time the city is too much too handle. But you bring a beautiful combination of nature and city. I've fallen in love with you. You feel like home. You are so full of life that I wouldn't mind being just by myself. I look forward to being alone with you.
Love, Fran

Hoe Street :)

Okay so the first news of my ward was that it's located on Hoe Street...so that was promising.
But after taking the Queensway tube, tranferring to Victoria tube, taking that for 45 minutes, then getting a little lost and finally walking for a half an hour we found our way to the White Chapel ward. Never have I felt so welcomed and comfortable in a new ward. So many people came talked to us and wanted to know all about our experience so far. The ward is small and everyone seems more than happy to be there.Bishop Odoi is great looking black man who can't be more than 33 and his wife Vida..well... she is loud and wonderful. No calling has been given yet but I'm more than looking forward to getting one. I've always been intimidated to get a teaching calling because, the experience of BYU wards calls for knowledge and a wow factor. In student wards it seems like people want to be impressed. But this ward is nothing like that, everyone feels comfortable and everyone is accepting that we are all learning the gospel at our own pace in our own way. Seriously I couldn't feel more at home in this ward and it's only the first week.
But wait! The best part was when we sat down before sacrament meeting started and a little black boy who must have been 7 or 8 got up and practiced his musical number "praise to the man" The spirit became so strong and it was so precious that I got a little teary eyed. :) I'm so happy to be here. I love London

National Gallery

The National Gallery yesterday...wow
Just try to remember 5th or 6th grade humanities when your teacher so boldly tried to teach you who Monet, and Vincent Van Gogh were. And though it may not have been significant or meaningful to you for some reason you will ALWAYS remember the images of their paintings these artists so beautifully mastered...even though you had no respect or appreciation for them.
BUT THEN!! You're wandering around the HUGE National Gallery looking at the TONS AND TONS of paintings and you look over, and there it is. A painting of sunflowers done by Van Gogh himself, and even though you didn't care before, now it feels like you just saw a celebrity. 'Cause there it is!! I've seen so many pictures of this painting through my whole life that to actually see it, just sitting there mounted on a wall was like finishing a 19 year long game of Where's Waldo. I knew what it looked like but I had finally found it. And that's not the only one. There were Davinci's and Rembrandts too, and once again I'm reminded Frances you're in LONDON! and I get super excited like I just barely arrived.

Being someone who never really appreciated art before...I'm repenting. In our walks class we go to gallery's and spend hours, and one of the challenges is to sit and look and write about a painting for half an hour. the painting I stared so intently at was by Johannes Vermeer "Young woman standing at a virginal" I still don't know what a virginal is...and I need to find out so...research is on it's way! But for some reason this one painting kept coming back to me and I wanted to study it. OF COURSE it was the one painting that was in a room with no bench. So like a real art student I sat on the floor and let annoyed tourists snap pictures and walk around me. I stared at this picture for ever and wrote about what I saw and what I felt. Even when I didn't really understand it, it felt like that painting was made just for me. Just for this one day of sitting in a museum; Johannes Vermeer painted this picture so I would be completely amazed and dumbfounded by a girl painted in 1672 who seemed to be staring into my soul.....
I love London.
